A Little Something About Me

Clarissa Lynn has strong roots in North Dakota coming from a small, family farm operation north of Stanton or just a little south of Pick City by the Lake Sakakawea area where she did more bale haulin' and cow milkin' than fishin'; however, Clarissa grew up in a musical family loving and learning to dance to old time and country music.

     Clarissa graduated from Dickinson State with a two-year broadcasting degree and a major in Elementary Education, later completing an Elementary Master's Degree from Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD and the University of Mary in Bismarck.

     Clarissa has always made radio a part of her weekends and summers while teaching during the school year.   Clarissa and her husband, Tom, who is an Ag salesman for Butler Machinery Company, enjoy family, friends, Clarissa's old '67 Chevy, Tom's Harley, German cooking, and lots of dancing and music, music, music....!

     "The BEST part of radio is the people I've met through the years," she says, "What a blessing!"

What familiar song is this?

"I wandered alone one night, when I heard an orchestra play, I met you when lights were bright, And people were carefree and gay. You were the beautiful lady in blue, I was in heaven just waltzing with you. You thrilled me with strange delight, Then softly you stole away."

If you guessed the "Blue Skirt Waltz", you are RIGHT! It's a much requested waltz on KBMR'S Happy Hour program. The music to "Blue Skirt Waltz" was originally an old Bohemian tune. Frankie Yankovich revised the music slightly, and then had a lyricist work on words for a new song. The result was "Blue Skirt Waltz". It was recorded in 1949. More than 4 million records were sold. Frankie Yankovich was titled as the World's Polka & Waltz King, 1915-1998.

Happy Hour Greetings to Happy Hour fans listening to our two hours of DANCING music every Sunday from noon til two o'clock!

You know it's SPRING time at KBMR Happy Hour when we announce the Spring Fling at the American Legion in Napoleon, North Dakota!

Mark your calendar for some good-old fashioned fun Sunday, May 1st dancing to two great bands: the Queen City Band from Dickinson, North Dakota and from South Dakota, the Dakota Rangers.

It's a fun change for me to get out of the studio and on the road to meet and greet the listeners who enjoy the Happy Hours at KBMR Radio. I always feel privileged to get on the dance floor with some of our listeners and I continue to learn something new from watching the many dancers. The American Legion is known for its fantastic, smooth dance floor and the hospitality is first class.

It's been a long, North Dakota winter - so let's have some fun and dance to a new season Sunday, May 1st in Napoleon, ND.

EMTERtainment weekly on the Sunday HAPPY HOUR at 11:30 KBMR!

Roger Emter has been known to say, "If I can learn just one song, I'll be happy." This was the dream of Roger Emter back in 1990 when he purchased his first button accordion. Roger's enthusiastic attitude toward old-time accordion music inspired his son, Adam to begin lessons also. After six months of practice sessions, Roger and Adam performed three songs on their button accordions in front of a live audience of 200 people, and the rest is history - so they say.

I met the Emters in Glen Ullin some years ago and cemented a life-long friendship with this Christian family! Once you attend their Christmas concert programs or any Emter show at their theater west of Mandan, you will also be inspired. They are now a THREE GENERATION performing family.Today,I'm sure it's an unbelievable dream come true for Roger Emter. The Emters have performed over 750 stage shows throughout 30 states, Canada, and Mexico. The Happy Hour plays their birthday song weekly and you can bet your button accordion, you'll always hear an Emter song on the Happy Hour! KBMR salutes the JMB Band from Minot, North Dakota!

The three talented musicians are comprised of Jerry Schlag on accordion, Myron Dammen on guitar, and Merlyn (Bud) Witty on bass. Their combined musical experience in the dance business is about 180 years! They have mastered 5 plus musical CD's delighting folks all across the state and the USA.

You can hear everything from memorable Scandinavian selections like Finska Valsen or the Clarinet and Beer Barrel Polkas. Their music includes country favorites along with many Schottisches too. They simply have something for everyone.
Jerry, Myron, and Bud have been playing LIVE music in the KBMR studios annually in early December. KBMR listeners look forward to this LIVE music on the radio. We hope to have them back in December of 2011.

That JOLLY accordion man, Victor Wald, from Napoleon, North Dakota continues to delight people across North Dakota with his talented style of accordion music. A giant of a man with hands and fingers that make you think how can he get those little accordion keys so perfectly struck? A giant teddy bear with a soft heart who loves to entertain people with his God-given gift of playing "by ear" those favorite old time tunes.

Victor Wald has two CD's that are played on the KBMR Happy Hour. The music features the late Butch Berreth on drums, and you can hear Victor's wife, Barbara, do vocals on a couple of the selections. Today, Victor is a one-man band with his wife Barbara by his side. Victor Wald recently played at the 44th annual Mercer County Winter Party at the Bismarck Eagles Club to a group of about 100 in attendance. You can always hear VICTOR WALD music on the 11:30 KBMR Happy Hour on Sundays from noon till 2:00.

One of my most memorable radio experiences was meeting legendary accordion player, Myron Floren at the Norsk Hostfest in Minot. Chester Reiten of the Hostfest said he credits Myron Floren with helping build the festival's reputation. In the first 26 years of the Norsk Hostfest, Myron only missed about three of the festivals. I remember Myron to be a very humble, modest, personality with an infectious smile who was so gracious to me.

Myron Floren played with the Lawrence Welk Show from 1950 till 1982. A thirty-two year weekly profession that brought happiness to the people who watched the skilled accordion player - not bad for a Roslyn, South Dakota boy who asked his dad for a ten dollar accordion at the early age of 7.

The HISTORY of the Polka Dance?
For me, Clarissa Lynn, it began in the kitchen dancing to music played by my Dad and cousins. We had music in the
barn while milking cows and dancing with Mom "in-between"
changing the milking machines!! As a young girl, I remember a few barn dances on our family farm. I didn't realize back then that I'd treasure those dancing memories.
Polka was first danced in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1835.
It is a lively round dance to HAPPY music creating smiles, laughter, and fun. It's a great aerobic workout if you can dance 3 or 4 at a time. I hope North Dakota continues the tradition by passing it down to other generations. It's new-fashioned fun for today's youngsters!! It's not just Grandpa's rock n' roll music. Check out a dance festival with a polka, waltz, or a 2-steppin' tune like at the Spring Fling scheduled for Napoleon, North Dakota in May.

Happy Hour fans regularly request "The Anniversary Waltz" by the very popular musical group, The Tibor Brothers from Hebron, North Dakota.
The TIBOR musical family goes back to grandfather, Leonard Hecker, who was born in Russia and migrated to the U.S. with his parents. He started a band in the 1920's in the Dickinson, ND area and daughter Margaret played piano. For Margaret, the years brought marriage to Joseph Tibor, children, and hard times, but always enough money to buy musical instruments for the children. To supplement the family income, Margaret took the five oldest children and played for church socials. They called themselves the Rhythm Cowboys - the year, 1947.
Since that time they have also been the Country Cousins and the Mavericks. (Fans still recall the Mavericks televison show.) In 1976, a new dimension was added to their music business with the creation of JoMar Recording Studio at Hebron, ND. Their first album at JoMar was "A Special Old Time Tribute to their Grandfather", featuring all nine brothers. That treasured album is still played on KBMR Happy Hour. It features Julius & Rose Miller, Joey Schmidt, and Tony Schaaf.

Theme Song

The POLKA CELEBRATION theme song is having a silver anniversary this year!

The very popular theme song of KBMR'S Happy Hour program has been played at the opening of the program for at least 25 years and maybe even a little longer. It's being celebrated this year and mentioned frequently on the program. Fans have never tired of the song and even have commented that they look forward to the song and it sticks in their head all week long. Some have said it's their favorite Happy Hour song. The idea of the opening theme song began with former DJ Marv Allen. It is on an album from Canada's POLKA King, Walter Ostanek. It is the first cut on the album entitled, "Anytime is Polka Time."

The vocal is by Murray McFadgen. The musicians include Walter Ostanek and Joey Miskulin on piano and accordion, Norm Kobal on tenor saxophone, clarinet, and flute, Ken Senko on banjo and guitar, Richard Ostanek on the electric bass, and Mark Habat on drums.

Thanks to our FANS, the song will be continued for many more years to come.
