BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) _ Former North Dakota Republican Governor Ed Schafer and Democratic Lieutenant Governor Lloyd Omdahl are joining up to fight a proposal to abolish property taxes.
Schafer and Omdahl put out a joint statement Thursday saying they oppose Measure 2 on the June 12th primary ballot.
Measure 2 is a constitutional amendment that would abolish property taxes. It says the Legislature would have to replace local governments' property tax revenue with state tax collections.
Schafer and Omdahl say the measure is vague and would lead to lawsuits over how it should be interpreted. They say it would shift power from local governments to the state Legislature.
Schafer says he understands people are frustrated about property taxes, but he says Measure 2 is the wrong solution.
