FARGO, N.D. (AP) _ Officials at the Red River Zoo in Fargo are celebrating the birth this month of a Sichuan takin (SICH'-wahn TAH'-kihn).
Officials say the 20-pound male is doing well. The zoo plans a naming contest.
The mother has been in Fargo on loan from the San Diego Zoo since 2002. The father died of heart failure last fall, and the zoo is seeking another breeding male through the Species Survival Plan. The animals are threatened by poaching and loss of habitat.
Sichuan takins are muscular, hoofed mammals sometimes called goat antelopes that are found in the mountainous Sichuan province of China. Males can grow to nearly 900 pounds.
