FARGO, N.D. (AP) _ Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker is promoting a
plan to build a major levee around rural communities south of the
city that would be flooded out by a Red River diversion project.
The proposal calls for a 10-foot ring dike to be built around
Oxbow, Hickson and Bakke subdivision. It would protect some of
those residents from water stored in a staging area for the
diversion.
Walaker says the cost of the levee would be comparable to the
cost of home buyouts that are currently part of the diversion plan.
The mayor says the Army Corps of Engineers seems to be
interested in the idea and recently released a conceptual drawing
of the plan.
Oxbow Mayor Jim Nyhoff tells KFGO radio it's too early for him
to comment on the plan.
