GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) _ The University of North Dakota is
already among the nation's leading schools in developing unmanned
aircraft. Now the school is taking steps to lead the way in
studying the ethics of using drones.
The Grand Forks Sheriff's Department may be using drones as
early as next spring to do things like survey the scenes of traffic
accidents or hazardous spills. But such use could raise privacy
issues.
A research committee at UND will create guidelines to handle
legal and ethical pitfalls that might come up with police use of
the drones. A preliminary version could be ready by January.
Congress has ordered the Federal Aviation Administration to
integrate drones into the U.S. airspace system by 2015. At least
three bills have already been introduced in Congress to address
concerns over privacy, security and other issues.
