BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) _ A Fargo representative says he's proud to wear the banner as North Dakota's first openly gay lawmaker, but his most important cause is helping to craft good legislation for all people.

Democratic Rep. Joshua Boschee (boh-SHAY') is among a freshman class of 25 lawmakers who began work Tuesday on the session's opening day. He says he was elected because of his platform, not because he's gay.

The 30-year-old Boschee is a student adviser at Minnesota State University Moorhead. He used to write a column for a weekly Fargo newspaper.

He says his agenda in Bismarck will include supporting bills on daycare regulations, tax relief, nutrition in schools and bolstering regulations that ban discrimination for housing based on sexual orientation.
