DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) _ A committee that has been studying a possible household pet ordinance in Devils Lake is wrapping up its work.

The City Commission last fall proposed an ordinance limiting the number of dogs or cats in a house, but a group of pet owners protested and the matter was tabled for further study. Committee Chairman Jim Moe said that a recommendation could come as early as this week.

Moe says if limiting pets is still a consideration, the ordinance would allow pet owners to keep their existing animals. He says no one would be asked to give up a pet.

The committee sought guidance from other North Dakota cities with pet ordinances, including Grand Forks, Minot, Valley City and Jamestown.
