Minot volunteers spread statewide message of hope

MINOT, N.D. (AP) _ Minot residents thankful for all the help they received as the city recovered from devastating floods are hoping to pay it forward.

Volunteers with the organization Stars of HOPE are organizing an event in February to help residents of Bucyrus, a southwestern North Dakota town decimated by fire in October.

Stars of HOPE encourages people to paint colorful wooden stars with messages of hope and inspiration. The stars are placed around disaster-stricken communities. Sponsored by New York Says Thank You Foundation, the project came to Minot last September. About 1,100 stars surrounded the valley that had been flooded in 2011.

Minot resident Mary Barker has launched the city's own Stars of HOPE operation. She says volunteers will take stars to Bucyrus on Feb. 16.
