BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) _ A bill in the North Dakota Senate would clamp down on who can access information from a crash report.
Under Senate Bill 2310, personal identifying information like driver identification numbers, names, addresses or telephone numbers would be confidential to anyone but the people involved in a crash or their legal representatives or insurers.
Bill sponsor Sen. Dave Oehlke says it would protect the wrong people from getting information.
But a lobbyist for the North Dakota Newspaper Association and the North Dakota Broadcasters Association submitted written testimony in opposition of the bill.
Jack McDonald says closing off access to the details would force media to rely on second-hand information. He added that the public would not be well-served.
