BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) _ The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for grants to help promote specialty crops.

State Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says the USDA is expected to award $600,000 to North Dakota for the program. The maximum grant is $100,000.

Goehring says the money can be used for projects such as developing seed varieties, reducing distribution costs, enhancing food safety and developing local and regional food systems.

Besides various vegetables, specialty crops grown commercially in North Dakota include dry beans, dry peas, confection sunflowers, lentils, potatoes, grapes and honey.

Applications are due by May 3.
