GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) _ Thieves broke into a Grand Forks wire supply business over the weekend and stole more than 6 tons of copper wiring worth an estimated $110,000 wholesale.
Dakota Supply Group President Tom Rosendahl says the theft is different from typical copper thefts because it targeted a wholesale supplier rather than an electrical contractor.
Copper thefts are not unusual because scrap prices for the metal are about $3.50 per pound. They've been even higher in recent years.
Minnesota U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar has introduced legislation to make metal thefts federal cases. North Dakota U.S. Sen. John Hoeven is a co-sponsor of the bill.
